State Law Is Reviewed MADISON (AP)- ing the state's birth control law would only serve the interests of ignorance and misinformation, a woman told legislators Tuesday. Mrs. C. J. Gander, represent-.

ing the Responsible Parenthood of Wisconsin, said a bill to prohibit the state from promoting birth control reflects "a new hysteria sweeping the state." "This bill promotes ignorance and thwarts distribution of information," she said. The bill under review by the Senate Welfare Committee would also prohibit advertisement of controceptives or abortion-inducing articles, and would retain the statutory prohibition against sale of contraceptives to unmarried persons. Dr. Frederick Hofmeister, an Elm Grove obstetrician who said he has delivered more than 10,000 babies, called the measure "unjust and impractical." Hofmeister said he has studied maternal deaths for 16 years, and has concluded that many deaths "could have been avoidled birth if the control mother information." had previous The restrictions on use of birth control items by unmarried women is improper, he said, because there is a twomonth tolerance period in the use of "the pill." Women should be allowed legal access to the contraceptive prior to marriage, he said. Assemblyman Kenneth Merkel, R-Brookfield, sponsor of bills which would strengthen the state's laws against contraceptives, spoke in favor of the bill.

"If we want to stop illegitimacy, we should look into the aid to dependent children law which pays people to have children out of Merkel said. A Milwaukee clergyman, Msgr. Paul Popek, said the state's existing laws should be preserved. He called Wisconsin "a sea of morality in a nation of immorality." He urged legislators to endorse the bill, adding: "You must legislate morality unless are an atheist." The committee took no imyou mediate action on the measure. John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams, made up the only father-son team to have served as President of the United States.
